Network Effectively For Better Results

Effective networking is a skill that not everyone has, but one that everyone can develop. Whether you are out of work and searching for a job, or simply trying to expand your professional opportunities, learning to network is a worthwhile skill to refine.

Remember that networking is about building relationships. While promoting yourself is part of the networking game, it’s more important to create a positive first impression. Gaining someone’s trust and interest is critical if you want them to remember you. Always start by asking the person’s name and questions about their work or company before promoting yourself. This puts people at ease, and makes them more receptive to your message.

Always have a “pitch” ready. This is a short summation of who you are, what you do, your skills and accomplishments, and what type of position you are seeking. This is often referred to as the “elevator speech.” You will inevitably be asked these questions, so be sure to have clear, concise answers ready. Time is always short at networking events, so create a way to describe yourself quickly.

It’s also a good idea to determine ahead of time who you would like to approach. Because time is limited, narrow your targets to people who you feel would be influential, or who could provide you with other connections in your industry.

Above all, make sure you have plenty of business cards and resumes, and keep a copy on your cell phone. If someone requests an electronic copy, you can email it immediately. Being prepared leaves a positive impression, and demonstrates your commitment to your career.
